Synthesizing Life?

One of the questions we ask i-Science students to consider is the difference between living organisms and non-living entitites. A recently published article discusses how advances in molecular virology may have implications for bioterrorism, but raises a much more fundamental issue – are viruses alive? If we can write down the chemical formula for a virus particle and then synthesize it in the laboratory, is it “alive”, and at what point should we stop playing around with this technology?
